Local football team needs urgent help as meeting aproaches(10.03.08)

The Bowburn Crowtrees football team who play in the Durham and District Sunday Morning League are set to have talks this Sunday 1pm to discus there future .
Bowburn have had football teams since a reported 1908 100 years although this is still to be confirmed ,The local team have struggled this season for players and have had a large number from outside of the village to keep the club running.
Bowburn Crowtrees fact will discuss on Sunday whether or not the club will continue, ever increasing costs of over £400 / season for the field and other costs including strips and referee bills have been paid but the club has presently no sponsor .The committee is also looking for members to help out selling the likes of domino cards and busters .
The main problem this year has not been money although a sponsor would help, but players ,there just does not seem to be the local lads coming through, and although the youth teams should help in a few years as the teams increase it is the present team who are struggling.
If  anyone is interested for next season either by playing sponsoring or just helping out then please email the club at BOWBURNCROWTREESFC@AOL.COM as soon as possible, we would like to wish the team all the best and hope something can be sorted on Sunday.

Has our village been robbed ? (10.03.08)

Some local people have been commenting on the amount of money that has been taken from the village to help pay for the New Durham Swimming pool ,if the figures are correct then some people are saying that over 11 million has been took to help the ever rising costs of the new pool if this is correct then surely the people of Bowburn should have been told of this .If anyone knows whether this is true or false then please email us at BOWBURNNEWS@AOL.COM so we can let everyone know the truth.

Award for Bowburn Youth Football (23.02.08)

On 31st January 2008 Bowburn Youth were awarded FA charter Standard Community Club Status by the Football Association, this is the highest award a Club can receive and Bowburn Youth FC are the first Club in the City of Durham to receive it.

Being a Community Club involves having teams for Mini-Soccer, youth and adults, being involved with local schools and having a Five Year Development Plan for the Club to follow.

A Community club must provide football for everyone including disabled players and next Season the Club will have 15 Teams with ages ranging from 5 years to 40+.

A Bowburn Youth Official told bowburn.net, Bowburn Youth Foorball Badge
"If things go to plan, a modified Five Year Development Plan will be used to secure funds from the Football Foundation to allow Bowburn Youth to deliver it's Five Year Plan. Every week we are attracting new players and next Season should see Club membership numbers rise to over 230.
We have great plans for the future including the introduction of Bowburn Football Club which will have an Adults and U18's team which will play on Saturdays and be feeder teams for our youth players, our Five Year Plan caters for players that are not even born yet and we are looking ahead to the future, this includes Bowburn Football Club playing in the Football Conference League in years to come.

A lot of hard work has gone into gaining Community Club Status and now hopefully the children of Bowburn and surrounding areas can experience Football at a different level."

This is a recent letter from Daphne Wallace From the Inner Wheel Club of Durham regarding a future event.

Bowburn Community Centre on Friday, 30th November - 10.00 to 12.00 noon. Billed as a 'Christmas Fayre' there will be a T0MOBOLA, several stalls including cakes, used books, toys, children's clothes, hand made cards, bric a brac etc. - plus coffee or tea and biscuits for 50p. Entrance free All proceeds go to our charity account - we support several but mine, as president for this year, is the NSPCC.   We had a similar event in the summer and even though attendance was not what we had hoped - it was a lovely sunny day! - we still managed to raise almost £700 so hope to improve on that this time around. Thanks Daphne Wallace Inner Wheel Club of Durham

Please give your support any other events coming soon email us at bowburnnews@aol.com

Did you guess right? (28.10.07)

The bands name is 'The Saints'
Here is an extract from an email I recently received from one of the bands members, Charlie Pragnall, who is now living in Australia.

"We were formed in about 1956 at Bowburn Boys Club which was then held in the Institute (The Tute as it was known) and played many local halls and pubs.

In the photograph from left to right, I am on the far left, the washboard player was Ronnie Mould who is still in the Bowburn area, the young man on the tea chest/ double bass is Billy Edwards from Durham, and then in the centre is Alan Clarke the leader and main singer of the group and who was very well know for his musical presentations at the Bowbelles concerts, the seated guitar player we cannot identify but the guitarist on the far right is Les Hare from an old Bowburn family. Alan and I regularly write to each other and he is now retired and living in Nuneaton, Warwickshire after a distinguished career as a music teacher and examiner. Alan and his parents used to live in Oxford Road Bowburn.

We also played regularly at Siemens Night Club in Spennymoor and were twice invited to play on the Carole Levis Discoveries shows at Sunderland and Newcastle Empires."

I later received a mail from another Group member, Alan Clarke, giving me some additional information .......
"Incidentally, Charlie forgot to tell you that the compere of our appearance at the Newcastle Empire was none other than the celebrated Jackie Collins-yes, the authoress and sister of Joan Collins. Imagine Bowburn lads of around 18 chatting to her in the wings? - what a thought!"

Hopefully a few more pictures and thoughts to come from far and wide!

The remaining stone has turned up!

Thanks to an alert individual who spotted it in some bushes - called the church warden and arranged to pick it up and return it.

You know who you are - and thank you!

God works in mysterious ways ! (13.06.07)

A further message from the church:

"Grateful thanks to the gentleman in Prince Charles Avenue who, noticing the safety fencing around the church had been opened and a dated down comer stone had been taken, removed the other one and phoned the churchwarden for it to be collected. It was retrieved today (Wednesday). Once again, thank you to that gentleman.
If anyone knows the whereabouts of the other one, we would like it back as it was our intention to donate it to our local history group."

Now isn't that heartening!
All that is needed now is for the remaining one to be returned!

Football Team Hoping for Success (10.06.07)

After last seasons disappointment of finishing 4th from bottom. only 1 place above local rivals Bowburn Cooperage, Bowburn Crowtrees have not only changed secretary, with Gary Hutchinson stepping down, but have also changed Manager.

David Foster has taken over from John Rowe and has already had a number of enquiries from different players wanting to join. At a meeting only last week, in which the club looked like folding, it was decided to carry on, a new committee was formed and David was appointed manager.

David is hoping to take the club to the next level and is also chasing some players of his own. David said "with the news of the field being improved we would like a team to match, as  well as local lads it is fair to say we need to bring in a few new faces. The village has two teams but last season some lads were just not turning up, I am hoping to get a squad together than can go places and if that means bringing players in then I will do, obviously I would like them in before our first training session, which is the 1st of July, but if I have to wait I will. If any players would like to join up send an email to crowtreesfc@aol.com and leave a contact name and number and  I will get in touch ."

If anyone is interested in sponsoring the team in any way at all you can also contact the same email address.

A message from the Church (08.06.07)

"As the church is being demolished certain things are to be retained for historic purposes. On the list were the 'down comer' dating stones. These were removed and placed on the ground by the demolition team on Thursday night and left behind the fences to be moved the next morning for safe keeping. Someone must have thought they were not wanted and took them through the night
Would that person or persons please give them back. If you leave them by the front gates behind the fencing we can then put them away until the new build is completed.
Thank you"

So - if you are responsible, or know who is responsible - please return the stones. They are of no use to anyone else and will hopefully form an historic part of the new Church

Goodbye 'Christ the King' (25.05.07)

Work has started on the demolition of Christ the King Church. Workmen have moved in this week to start the demolition process.

The church was built in the 1960's at a cost of less than £1,000

The design of the church was certainly different and both loved and hated by village residents. However, I think all will miss it.

Council Approves Recreation Area (20.04.07)

Good news for the village is that the Council Cabinet recently approved the plans for the development of the Recreation Field Area in the village. This means that it will now go before the Planning board in the next few months.

Congratulations and thanks have to go to the villagers who formed the PARC group They are the ones who have been working hard on this.       Well done!

What's behind the shutters? (20.04.07)

Community Centre & Youth Club (19.04.07)

Well, despite writing about it on here last month (21st March) and a leaflet going to every householder, the recent consultation event regarding the future for Bowburn Community Centre and the Youth Club was only attended by around 70 people (out of a population of approx 3,500)

The numbers attending the consultation event on 28th March were disappointing but some questionnaires have been filled in since then and more can still be.  The option plans (of one or two buildings) are still on display at the Community Centre, as are spare copies of the questionnaire.

A decision has to be made within the next few days, both by the Community Association and the Youth Club, on whether to apply for Big Lottery Community Buildings Fund funding and, if so, with what option.

Opinion as described by those who've filled in the questionnaire so far has been predominantly for refurbishing both existing  buildings.  The ultimate decisions must be with the charity trustees of both organisations.

However those decisions have to be based on judgements about:

(a) what would best serve the needs of the whole community (hence the request for views in the consultation exercise) and

(b) what levels of funding can realistically be expected.  (Unfortunately, these two things don't necessarily point in the same direction!)

So if you don't make your feelings known - don't complain! Get along to the Community Association and fill in a form.

Increased Police Presence (18.04.07)

Well, it was only mentioned at the meeting last night but it has happened, and been noticed, already.
Two Police Officers made a very visible presence today walking around the village for most of the day, and people have commented on the fact.

This is exactly what the villagers want to see, but we need this presence on an evening also.
Let us know on the forum or via mail if you are aware of the increased presence as we would like to report back at the next Village Meeting.

Tail-upon-end Housing Plan changes (18.04.07)

We have been informed of changes to the plans for the Tail upon End Lane development and have looked at the council planning site for details of changes. Main changes are shown in the picture below (marked by red arrow).

Tail upon end development changes

What is currently an access road to the field from Robert Terrace will now become 2 further houses!

The Full Planning application can be viewed on the Council site HERE

Visit the site, have a look at the plans and leave any comments or objections online.

Village Partnership Meeting (17.04.07)

Tonight was the April meeting of the Bowburn & Parkhill Community Partnership which was attended by more people than normal!
Local Police always attend the meeting to give a report and answer questions. Needless to say there were a lot of questions tonight regarding recent and ongoing disturbances in the village.

The basic outcome is that the Police will be holding meetings over the coming months with various officials from Local Organisations to discuss the current situation. Inspector Dodds has said that there will be increased Police presence in the village, extra patrols and a form of 'Street Safe' initiative will be implemented.

The Police have asked for the villagers to be vigilant and help them by reporting any incidents using the 0845 60 60 365 telephone number. Only use the 999 number in case of  emergency.
By reporting incidents you will help the Police & the village, to build up it's case for action.

The Police have promised support for the Youth Football team in any meetings with FA or League Officials to help bring back the teams to the village.

So, this month, please be vigilant, report any offences you see and lets see if increased Police action is working.

Date Change! (15.04.07)

The award-winning Fishburn Band has been booked again to play for the Banner Group in Bowburn Community Centre.  The date was originally going to be 27th April but has been changed to Friday 4th May.

The reason for the date change is that a certain local football team's match will be televised that night, and, as they are looking to win promotion to the Premiership it was deemed likely that attendance at the concert could suffer.

This Championship class band proved a great success last year when they played a popular programme in Bowburn.
During the interval, a special edition of the score of “The Bowburn March” – composed by Ray Farr, specially to mark last year’s centenary celebrations – will be presented to representatives of Bowburn Junior School.
It is hoped that, in years to come, children at the school who are learning to play brass instruments will be able to play this rousing number, or join in when it is played by an adult band.  (Who knows – might Bowburn one day have its own brass band?)

Tickets for the concert are now on sale at £4 Adults, £2 Bairns and £3 Concessions. Available from the Community Centre or by ’phoning 0191-377-1491 or 377-0553.

Doors and bar open at 7.00pm.  Concert starts at 7.30pm.

The Banner Group would like to express thanks to all concerned, to the Band itself, to Carrie and others at the Community Centre, for making it possible to change the date of the concert.

Keep Britain Bowburn Tidy - not! (15.04.07)

Just in case you haven't been to the Park/Football field area lately we thought we would let you see how it looks.

Maybe we should make this a quiz and spot how many Crimes took place!

Despite the damage to the pitch area and the mess, The Cooperage local Football team had a home fixture today.

Club Officials and spectators we spoke with were enraged by the mess and damage to the pitch area and also expressed their support for the Youth Teams.

Youth Football Update (15.04.07)

We have been given a copy of a letter sent from The Youth Football League to the Officials of Bowburn Youth Football declaring that the facilities at Bowburn are unsafe for youngsters to play and arrangements must be made to play matches elsewhere.

Note
A copy of this letter will be posted here later today

More Youth Football News (12.04.07)

We have just heard that the proposed development of the Football Area in the village has been cancelled due to the teams having to move out of the village to train and play their Football.
This is a direct result of the incident reported below.

So a groundbreaking development which was planned for the village, backed by the Football Association, now has to be shelved!

What a sad loss for the Village and more so for our young Footballers.

Bowburn Junior Footballers forced to Quit Village! (12.04.07)

Due to an incident involving local Teenagers which took place while a Bowburn Youth Football match was in progress the Bowburn Youth Team may be forced to stop training and playing their football in the village.

Officials of the Club could be asked to face an FA inquiry as a result of a complaint made to the FA by the visiting team.

For more details on this - visit the forum and watch this space!

Police Contacts (12.04.07)

In light of recent incidents in the village we have been requested to publish the contact number for Police and explain the contact process.
We have shown it alongside each index page for some time now but here it is all big and bold.

Police telephone Number 0845 60 60 365

So what is the difference between this number and 999?

Well, here is an explanation of which one to call and when (courtesy of Durham Police Web Site)

Callers should only dial 999 when:

  • Life is at risk
  • Person(s) are badly injured
  • A crime is in the process of being committed
  • Offenders are nearby
  • There has been a serious disruption to the flow of traffic
  • The Force has recently introduced a single non-emergency number, which will direct calls to a Communications Centre. This non-emergency number is 0845 60 60 365.

    So now you know!

Please be aware that this number is also advertised for all General Enquiries, so if you look at the 3rd and 4th criteria on the list above you are well within your rights to call 999 to report any disturbances when "Offenders are nearby" or "A crime is in the process of being committed."

Note: We have blurred this whole picture due to a 'rumour' that a parent of one individual in the picture objects because their child is 18!
We apologise to the person who sent in the picture that we can not use it. Maybe the Northern Echo will

Isn't it time our 30+% increase in Police taxes went towards stopping this?

    Link Road Final Approval (31.03.07)

After a seven-year delay, work on the £11.45m link road to the South of the village, will begin in May.
In an statement yesterday, Transport Minister Gillian Merron announced that the Government had provided £10.5m towards the road linking the A1(M) to the A19 in County Durham.
The link was first proposed in Durham County Council's local transport plan in 2000.

The project was delayed when a proposal for an opencast mine was submitted along the route, forcing a public inquiry.
The opencast plan was rejected, but the resulting delay has seen costs for the road spiral by a further £5m.
In February, the County Council granted conditional approval for the A688 Wheatley Hill to Bowburn link.
And yesterday, the Government agreed to provide the lion's share of the £11.45m budget, with the balance being funded by the county council.

Red Line below shows the proposed New Road, along with 2 new roundabouts adn upgraded work to existing roads.
Note: This is not an accurate plan of the proposed route

Well, there is a proposal for a development of 79 further new houses on this site. (see plan below)

These will be a mixture of 2, 3 & 4 bedroom houses for sale.

    development plan
    Plan courtesy of Bowburn Interchange

At this stage we have to stress that this is a 'suggested' proposal for housing subject to local acceptance and planning approval at local and National level as this would have to enforce a 'change of use' from what is currently scheduled as a 'recreation area'

Full details of this will be in your next issue of Bowburn Interchange due to arrive through your doors very soon.

The Notice board gives details of contacts where you can leave your views or email the web site and we will pass your concerns on.

    Community Centre & D J Evans Youth Club (21.03.07)

The Community Centre and Youth Club are both buildings which are in need of Major Refurbishment - and as ever there are differing views how to go forward.

Demolish the existing buildings and build new, purpose built premises or Refurbish to an acceptable standard

Your thoughts and feelings on this subject are very important to the village and you are invited to attend a Consultation Event on Wednesday 28th March between 3.00pm and 8.00pm at Bowburn Community Centre. Here you can see full details of this proposal.
You should also receive a 'flyer' through your letterbox with details of this event.

    It is important!

If you feel strongly about it - go along and voice your opinion!

Don't wait until it is too late!

Big name DJ's and MC's, a competition for a local MC, and maybe some 'freebies' to be given away!

It's good to see something organised in the village for this age group.

    New Mining memorial (12.11.06)

miner with pick pictureA former miners coal wagon has been donated to the village and will go on display as a permanent memorial to the villages mining heritage.
The memorial will be mounted on a section of rail with sleepers to represent a working vehicle.

The coal wagon is currently going through some restoration before being permanently sited adjacent to Durham Road, opposite the war memorial.

We will bring more news when we have it.

    Miners Memorial (10.11.06)

The proposed list of men and boys killed at Bowburn Colliery, to be included on the new Mining Memorial in Bowburn Community Centre, is now listed on the “Interchange” site.

The organisers are trying to finalise this list of names and any contacts before next week.

Click Here to view the page with the information and get in touch quickly if you want to add or amend any information.

The organisers are also looking for contact details for relatives of any of the men listed, so that invitations can be sent for the dedication of this memorial which will be held on 16th December.
    Note
They do have many details already but there are several gaps – especially in respect of the earlier names.

    Remembrance Sunday 12th November (09.11.06)

    lest we forget

Remembrance Sunday this year is being marked by a much bigger ceremony than in previous years due to this being the villages Centenary Year.
The Reg Vardy Band, one of the best in the country, will be playing at a joint service in Bowburn Community Centre, starting at 9.45am, and then again at the War Memorial, starting at about 10.55am with The Last Post scheduled to be played, of course, at 11.00am.

Wreaths will be laid in the Community Centre, then taken and re-laid at the War Memorial.
It is expected that at least two ex-Service Association standards will be present, as well as the new Centenary Banner.

School's 'Recipe for healthy Eating'  (02.11.2006)

Pupils in County Durham schools are cooking up a treat to promote healthy eating. Projects involving 19 schools including our own Bowburn Junior School have received £1,500 each to develop 'Cook It' clubs. The clubs, primarily aimed at 11 to 14-year-olds, will also look at planning balanced meals, cooking on a budget and food preparation. The scheme, which runs until August next year, has been funded by the Continyou organisation.
Alison Young, Food and Healthy Schools Advisor at Durham County Council, said: “The Cook It clubs will show young people that healthy eating can be fun and can also be beneficial to their well-being. “This is a chance for them to think about what they might be eating and give them fun, hands-on experience of planning and preparing foods so they can see the wide variety of food available to them.”

    Scam Alert (08.10.06)

One of the latest 'bogus' scams is to do with a parcel Company.
Someone has been leaving cards through letterboxes stating that PDS (Parcel Delivery Service) have tried to leave a parcel but no-one was in, they then go on to ask you to call a number to arrange an alternate delivery. The problem is that the telephone number is a premium rate number and you are left hanging on the line while the call cost mounts up. If you come across this call the local police.

    Village roads a mess (08.10.06)

Driving around the North end of the village is like driving through a bomb site at the moment! Prince Charles Avenue is a disgrace with the condition of the repaired road worse than it was prior to the works being carried out. More recently, Phillip Avenue was closed for a while - did they advertise the fact? no of course not!

The Contractors seem to not care about the condition and state of the roads.
Interestingly I found these statements on the Haslam Homes web site:

an extract from their Health & Safety Statement

    "Haslam Homes are committed to:

    • consultation with the local community when working in the area
    • Visiting local schools prior to commencing on site and arranging pupil visits to raise awareness of the dangers from playing on building sites"

    and from their Environmental Policy

    • "Gaining respect from the local communities in which we work by ensuring all our sites are clean and tidy and that dust and noise are kept to a minimum."

This topic on the forum is by far the most popular and despite complaints from locals living in the area Haslam Homes seem to turn a blind eye and fail to respond.

Time to fill up your tanks (15.09.06)

Whether you like shopping at Sainsbury or Asda doesn't really matter but what does matter is that the 2 retailing giants have started a fuel 'price war', which is only good for the motorists among us!

On Wednesday Asda reduced it's unleaded and diesel to 87.9p and 92.9p per litre respectively. Sainsbury and Morrisons followed suit and matched those prices last night whilst Tesco knocked 1p a litre off unleaded.

    Thank You (15.09.06)

George Stoker sends his thanks for all the well wishes he has received during the last few months. George is out of hospital after his second spinal operation in 5 months and is at home recovering. He is also looking forward to getting some work done on the web site!

Recent work causes more mess (01.09.06)

If Prince Charles Avenue is not bad enough, recent work and ongoing work on the road is starting to make the village look like a rubbish tip! That is the view of local residents who have wrote to the web site. A number of complaints at the way the road has been dug up and resurfaced is the main issue. The road was bad enough before it was dug up but now it has been left in a very bad way as they move further up the road to continue work. Some readers have pointed out the condition of a number of other roads in the village.

Look out for a picture report coming soon!
