Wins Award story from our friends at the
nothern echo(06.10.11)
A
VILLAGE school has won an international award for the second time.
Bowburn Infant
and Nursery School,
in Bowburn, County Durham, has been given the British
Council’s
International School Award in recognition of its work to bring the
world into the classroom.
The
school has links to Belgium, Germany and Latvia through the Comenius
Project and Nepal through the Global Schools Partnership.
Internationally-themed
days are held in school throughout the year.
Trish
Fay, from the school, said: "I am very proud of our achievement. Our
children have learned so much about other cultures and countries while
having fun at the same time.
"Hearing
our five to seven-year-old pupils sing in Norwegian and Dutch is
amazing."
John
Rolfe, from the British Council, congratulated all 800 UK schools to
receive the accreditation this year.
Beamish
brings fun to heritage day(06.09.11)
Beamish
brings fun to heritage
day
Beamish Museum will put on activities for children at this
Saturday’s banner exhibition at Bowburn Community Centre.
Gillian Robinson, Assistant Keeper of Social History at the
museum’s Regional Resource Centre, assisted by a volunteer,
will
run “design your own banner” and “dress
up as a
miner” attractions, as well as taking a mining object
handling
box, with mining objects that people can handle.
“These have proved very popular in the past”, said
Gillian,
who is also bringing two banners from the museum’s
collection.
“I’m very much looking forward to taking part in
this
important heritage event”, she said.
The museum’s banners have not been seen in public for many
years
and will join over 50 others in the exhibition. “Many of
these
have been here before”, said Mike Syer, secretary of Bowburn
Banner Group, which is organising this annual Heritage Open Days event
for the fifth time. “However some have not come recently and
at
least six banners are appearing for the first time. We expect well over
300 visitors again. Many of them will bring cameras to add to their own
collections of banner images. Bowburn’s recently refurbished
community centre, with its two large halls, is a perfect place to hang
so many banners together, with space around them to take pictures. They
can also see some of the superb photographs taken by members of Durham
Photographic Society, which will also be on show.
“We’re delighted that Beamish is going to add
children’s activities to these attractions, for the first
time.
This will surely help more young people to appreciate the heritage of
mining communities.
“We’re also grateful to the East Durham Corridor
Area
Action Partnership, whose funding has made this exhibition possible,
and to the Durham Miners Association, whose help with transport and by
lending several of the banners, has been crucial”, added
Mike.
The exhibition will be open to the public from 10am till 4pm on
Saturday, September 10. However visitors are advised to arrive before
3pm, as some banners may be taken away before the official finish.
Admission is free. There will be various stalls, with books and
memorabilia on display and for sale, and refreshments will be served
from the community centre’s new kitchen.
Bowburn Community Centre, which has two car parks, is about 50m north
of the traffic lights on Durham Road (A177), Bowburn, and about 500m
south of the A1(M), Junction 61. There are regular bus services to and
from Durham, and the building is fully accessible.

Official
re-opening of football field(21.7.11)
Just
to let the village know that on the night of Thursday the 21st between
10.30pm and 7.00am my vehicle and another parked outside my property
were “tampered with” by metal thieves…!
They obviously were looking for copper pipe located in the pipe carrier
located on the vehicle roofs..
Locks were cut off and the carriers damaged in their efforts to
potentially nick a few quid’s worth of copper..!
There is probably more vehicles in the village that had the tube
carriers “looked in” but the owners will be
unaware..! the incident have been reported to police and an appeal for
any one with CCTV overlooking the Philip avenue and Robert terrace area
would be appreciated…
Official
re-opening of football field(06.7.11)
Ohio
band returns to Bowburn to launch football tournament Two new football
pitches in Bowburn Park will be officially re-opened on Sunday, July
11. Cllr Dennis Morgan, Chairman of Durham County Council, will
formally open the ground, at Bowburn, near Durham, at 9am. After that
the “pep band” of The Ohio State University
Marching Band Alumni will perform from 9.15 till 9.45am. A youth
football tournament will then follow. Bowburn Youth Football Club will
compete against Coxhoe Youth FC, in six age groups, for the new Trophy
donated by Councillors Williams and Blakey. (The age groups will be
under-8s Development, under-8s, under-9s, under-10s, under-11s and
under-13s.)
A
guest team will then play the adult Bowburn FC team, which plays in
Division 3 of the Durham & District Sunday Morning League. Hot
dogs and other refreshments will be available throughout the morning.
The tournament is expected to finish between 12.30 and 1pm.
The
new football pitches were laid last summer, thanks to funding from the
Bowburn Regeneration Fund. This fund, created from the sale of land for
housing by the former Durham City Council, has already helped other
improvements in the village, including a children’s play area
in the same park.
The
Ohio State University Marching Band Alumni (also known as The Best Damn
Band in the Land, or TBDBITL for short) is playing a concert at Bowburn
Community Centre this Friday evening (starting at 7.30pm) and will be
marching with Bowburn’s banners through the village, and then
into Durham for the Miners’ Gala, on Saturday.

Bowburns
own Billy Snooks Takes Family on Bike Ride article from evening
Chronicle 14/3/11
Lazy
days in the sun are the order of the day for most family holidays, but
that’s far too dull for the Snooks. Coreena Ford takes a look
at what this family is doing to raise money for the region’s
children’s heart unit. ADVENTUROUS family the Snooks would
rather tackle stages of the Tour de France cycle race when they get
together. Dressed in matching outfits – like the Von Trapp
family in The Sound of Music – the sporty team took on Mont
Ventoux in the French Alps last year, a 14-mile ride up a gradient of
9% that took each rider three hours. And in five weeks the group
– who range in age from 27 to 62 – will head to
France to ride up the Alpe D’Huez, a mountain with 21
terrifying hairpin bends. The group, from Coxhoe, County Durham, hope
to raise hundreds of pounds for the Children’s Heart Unit
Fund (CHUF) at Newcastle’s Freeman Hospital. Their efforts
have come at a telling time for the unit too, which is being reviewed
as part of Government plans to reduce heart surgery centres from 11 to
six or seven. Andrew Snook, 33, works as a consultant for computer
company TSG, which has made CHUF its chosen charity after the heart
unit saved the life of its founder Graham Wylie’s daughter
Kiera, now 14 months old. Andrew, who has a four-year-old daughter with
his wife Stacey, 30, said: “Hospitals like the Freeman
perform miracles day in, day out and it’s important that
their work is recognised. Hopefully our fundraising will raise more
donations as well as awareness of the unit’s work.
“Our cycling holidays started a couple of years ago when my
cousin Billy, who’s 28, decided to do the Coast-to-Coast
cycle ride. “My dad Colin, who’s 62, wanted to do
it too ... and in the end, six of us took part and had a great time,
even though the weather was awful.” The group –
Andrew, his dad Colin, cousin Billy, Billy’s wife Nina, 27,
brother-in-law Allan Main, 40 and uncle William, 58 – loved
it so much they planned the Mont Ventoux trip, which took place last
summer, with all the family wearing matching shirts and caps. And on
March 30 they will journey back to France. Andrew said:
“We’re all hooked on road cycling now. Last
September we travelled in my uncle’s motorhome to Mont
Ventoux in Provence to cycle up the Tour de France mountain pass in
memory of Tom Simpson. “Tom was a professional cyclist from
Haswell, a pit village only a few miles from where we live, and he died
cycling up Mont Ventoux in the Tour de France in 1967. He was also the
only Briton to win the annual World Cycling Championship.
“Needless to see we had many people tooting horns in support,
shouting “Allez, Allez!” as we cycled up.
“My dad and I went up once. . . but the other four
free-wheeled back to the bottom and went up the mountain three times!
They were in the saddle for a painful 13 hours to achieve that! We
started looking at the other famous mountain stages of the Tour de
France and settled on the Alpe D’Huez. “The idea is
that we cycle to the top on April Fool’s Day, April 1, have
lunch at the ski resort at the top, then rally back down and go up at a
more leisurely pace. To sponsor the family, visit

Village
attacked from Space ?(12/01/11)
Well
it got you attention not attacks from space but pot holes in the
village ,there has been a number of complaints about the potholes
around the village especially the ones between Henry Avenue and
Halgarth Estate ,where one driver took his car to the garage and it
cost £350 to be fixed according to local people . We
understand this is a national problem but the size of some of these
holes latley is not on and the way the petrol prices are going up
people will be forced of the road ,we do pay car tax but what
for ?
